Yorkshire Water Services Fined

Yorkshire Water Services (YWS) Ltd have been fined £9,000 and ordered to pay £27,000 prosecution costs after admitting to breaching their suspended solids emission and biological oxygen demand limits for the Tadcaster Trade Treatment Works.

The works treat trade effluent from three breweries in the town, Scottish & Newcastle, Coors and Samuel Smith.  An environmental officer visiting the plant in early April 2006 discovered system alarms had been turned off prompting him to send a warning letter.  In May 2006, YWS notified the EA of a breach in April 2006.  The breach was classified in the highest risk category, posing a “major environmental impact” as the suspended solids levels were 10 times higher than permitted.

Since the end of 2004 YWS was knowingly receiving more waste than the treatment plant had the capacity to process.  YWS had a number of previous convictions and were cautioned for four offences that took place in mid-2004 and admitted to other offences that occurred in the first half of 2006.
