A planned ready meal factory in Wales that will be partly powered by its own waste has been given £500,000 funding by the Welsh Assembly. The grant will go towards the £5m cost of creating the anaerobic digestion system to power about 10% of the factory.
Ready meals from the new RF Brookes factory in Rogerstone near Newport, will be supplied to the likes of Marks & Spencer and other retailers.
The system will utilise food waste from production to provide heat and power for the processing plant. The system allows a reduction in landfill waste and helps to reduce CO2 emissions by around 7,500 tonnes a year.
