Freshtime UK Fined
Freshtime UK Ltd, who prepares vegetables and salads for major supermarkets, have been fined £19,800 and ordered to pay full Environment Agency costs of £2,388. The company pleaded guilty to not complying with the packaging regulations, as they had not been registered for six years.
Companies with an annual turnover greater than £2 million and which handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year are required to register with the Environment Agency. Businesses are responsible for the packaging used in their operations and the regulations are put in place for businesses to reduce the amount of packaging produced and sent to landfill sites.
Failure to register meant Freshtime had avoided paying £17,853 over the six years. The money raised from compliance with this legistation goes directly into the recycling industry.
