North Devon Farmer Fined
A North Devon farmer was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay £3,173 costs for pouring slurry over a cliff near a coastal footpath and beach. The slurry entering the sea was found to be at least 10 times more polluting than raw sewage, with a Biochemical Oxygen Demand of 3,260 mg/l.
The farm was heavily stocked and had insufficient slurry storage and available land for the spreading of animal waste and dirty water. The slurry was directed to the edge of the cliff by a section of pipe that carried the slurry under the coastal footpath. Farmers must observe best farming practice to ensure the environment is protected from pollution.
