Taunton Cider, Taunton

All effluent generated from the brewing of cider is discharged to the onsite treatment plant which can handle crude effluent loadings of 1,820kgCOD/day and 564 m3/day and meet sewer discharge limits of 710:500 (BOD:TSS).

Total Project Cost

STG £10,000 (plant modified in 1996)

Outline Of Plant
The original plant consisted of a balance tank, high rate activated sludge with liquid oxygen injection, settlement tank and ancillary equipment. The plant was installed in 1993 to pre-treat the cider effluent prior to discharge to Wessex Water sewage treatment works.

Outline Of Project
msa were called in after both the plant's designers and suppliers had consistently failed to get the plant to reliably achieve the required standards of effluent. msa's input was a thorough review of the design of the plant, highlighting the failures and recommending process measures to ensure more stable and robust operation. This minimised capital costs and ensured that full reliable performance was achieved for the first time in three years, within 3 weeks of the plant re-starting.
