Full-time Graduate Engineer Vacancy

Job Description

We currently have a vacancy for a Full-time (permanent) Graduate Engineer to assist with our ongoing wastewater treatment related assignments and projects in the UK and Overseas.

Our team is at the forefront of many key wastewater projects across the UK and Ireland. The successful candidate will be able to deliver solutions that prioritise innovation and sustainability working with leading household name brands and consumer products. You will be given early exposure to wastewater treatment plant design and operation working closely with our clients.

The selected candidate shall be educated to degree level in a relevant Engineering discipline (Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental or Process Engineering) and be capable of assisting with the preparation of technical reports and design specifications for key clients from initial concept through to design and formal presentations to client.

The ideal candidate will have some experience (≥ 6 months) working in an industrial setting and will have the ability to, after coaching and development, be capable of leading design project(s) in time.

Some experience in the water and wastewater or food and drink industry would be advantageous but is not essential.

You will be based in our Trowbridge office and work on assignments for our UK and overseas clients. There will be a requirement to visit our clients sites across the UK (accompanied) and this may involve overnight stays. In time, there may be an opportunity to undertake overseas visits (accompanied) for key project work etc.

The target start date for the successful candidate will be early August 2024 but there may be flexibility for the right candidate.

 

The Company

MSA Environmental Ltd is a leading environmental and engineering consultancy specialising in the design of wastewater treatment and water reuse systems for food and drink production sites. The company was formed in 1994 and over this time we have delivered innovative, high performance technical solutions and wastewater related consultancy to the likes of Saputo Dairy UK, Kerry Ingredients, Dale Farm, Nestlé, Camden Town Brewery, Mars, Mondelez, Thatchers Cider, Kerry Foods, Coca-Cola and many more. We work predominantly work across the UK but we also work on overseas and we currently have live projects in Spain, Ireland, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and Trinidad and Tobago. We provide a wide range of consultancy services to our clients including:

  • feasibility studies and review documents
  • detailed design of wastewater treatment and water reuse systems
  • water and wastage minimisation audits
  • wastewater treatment training courses for clients
  • operational support and advice to clients with existing onsite effluent treatment processes
  • laboratory analysis

We work with a wide range of wastewater and water treatment technologies including dissolved air flotation, membrane bioreactor (MBR), anaerobic digestion, activated sludge, moving bed bioreactors (MBBR), ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and many more.

We are currently a team of seven staff comprising environmental scientist and engineers. We have an active, energetic, hardworking and professional team including Chartered Water and Environmental Managers (CIWEM) and environmentalists.

Our services are in high demand and we have ambitious growth plans and therefore, we are seeking high calibre individuals to join our dynamic team to help meet the needs of our clients both existing and new.

 

Job Requirements

The candidate shall have the following:

  • Be educated to degree level of at least 2:1 in a relevant Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Process, Environmental or Chemical Engineering).
  • A dynamic and driven individual keen to establish a career in the environmental sector.
  • Able to work independently and complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • English Language proficiency: C1 (Common European Framework Reference (CEFR)).
  • Excellent numeracy skills.
  • Shall be a completer/finisher of all tasks assigned.
  • Ability to work well in a team and demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
  • Basic ability in AutoCAD would be required for the role, but an intermediate/advanced ability would be advantageous.
  • Ability to solve problems, complete assigned tasks efficiently, and meet project deadlines.
  • Some experience with treatment system process design including equipment selection, pumping systems and pipeline design would be advantageous.
  • Have a good understanding of fluid mechanics and hydraulic design.
  • Produce clear written reports/documents in a prompt timeframe.
  • Some project management experience would be advantageous.
  • The ideal candidate shall be comfortable during technical discussions and during formal presentations with our clients.
  • Fully IT literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Proficient in Excel and using Spreadsheets (VBA experience is advantageous but not essential).
  • Eligible to work in the United Kingdom.
  • Full UK driving license is desirable.

 

 

Role Responsibilities:

The role shall cover the following key responsibilities:

  • Supporting with client site visits/meetings
  • Laboratory work including wastewater microscopy analysis, effluent quality testing & jar testing
  • On site Water & Wastage Optimisation audits
  • Liaison with Water and Environmental Authorities on behalf of clients (e.g. regulatory support/permits)
  • Detailed data analysis and construction of mass balances
  • Assisting with the preparation of technical reports and design specifications (including plant sizing, control philosophies and commissioning plans etc)
  • Assisting with project tender management
  • Support with feasibility studies including technical & commercial analysis
  • Support with engineering drawings including P&IDs, layouts (2D and 3D)
  • Detailed technical report writing based on data analysis and on-site auditing
  • On site troubleshooting & assessment of existing wastewater treatment plants
  • Data driven GAP analysis
  • Supporting design workshops and HAZOP studies
  • Some office administrative support

 

 

Package and Benefits

The salary range for this graduate engineering position is £25,000 to £27,000 pa plus annual performance bonus and shall be based on qualifications and experience.

There are opportunities for fast-tracking (within 6 to 12 months) to the next tier level on our engineering pathway (design/process/mechanical engineer), subject to meeting skills matrix criteria, and this will command a salary range of £28,000 to £35,000 pa plus annual performance bonus.

20 Years of Service Award

Congratulations to Jerad O’Pray who received a 20 years service award this summer.

Jerad joined MSA straight from university and has worked his way up the ranks from Project Assistant to Managing Director.
His continued commitment and dedicated service to MSA has been invaluable over the years.

MSA re-design Distillery Wastewater Plant

MSA Environmental has been working with the world’s top selling Bitters and Rum producer Angostura, located in Trinidad, and helping them re-engineer their wastewater treatment plant to facilitate increased production and meet their treated effluent discharge parameters.

After an initial assessment it was decided that a redesign of the Anaerobic and Aerobic treatment systems was needed and the works are nearing completion.

Graduates join the MSA Team

We are pleased to introduce our two newest team members Alice Wynne & John Edgley.

 

Alice joined MSA in September 2020 as our Graduate Environmental Scientist

Alice has experience working in conservation management and she has a BSc Biology from the University of Newcastle.

John joined the team in early September 2020 as a Graduate Engineer. John has previous experience in project engineering and has a MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Swansea.

MSA introduces the two new members of the team, Millie & Alex.

MSA is pleased to introduce the two newest team members in Millie Caple & Alex Cronin.

Millie joined MSA in August 2019 as our Graduate Environmental Scientist. Her background is in Geography and she has a BSc Physical Geography & Geology from the University of Plymouth.

Alex Cronin joined the team in September 2019 as a Graduate Engineer. Alex has previous experience in the pharmaceutical industry and has a MEng in Chemical & Environmental Engineering from the University of Nottingham.
