THE CHALLENGE
The Dale Farm, Dunmanbridge site in Cookstown, Northern Ireland produces a range of hard-pressed cheese products and whey protein products.

Effluent is processed onsite at the Dairy Wastewater Treatment plant. The plant employs primary and secondary treatment before it is discharged into the Lissan River under tight NIEA permit limits.

MSA have a long working relationship with Dale Farm dating back to 2014 during which we have supported the site through many upgrade projects.  The most recent of which was the Cheese Plant 2 project (CP2) which was completed at the end of 2024.  This project saw the installation of a brand new cheese manufacturing plant capable of producing up to 20,000 tonnes of hard pressed cheese per year.

This project created a significant increase to the sites effluent profile resulting in the need to upgrade the treatment plant to safeguard compliance.

WHAT WE DID
MSA provided technical support throughout all stages of the project from concept design, all the way through to installation and commissioning.

MSA provided technical support throughout all stages of the project from the initial concept design all the way through to installation and commissioning. The project involved the following main components:

  • New Divert Tank
  • New DAF treated tank
  • New Anoxic Tank
  • New Aeration Tank
  • New Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) trains
  • New screw press system

We were initially commissioned to model the implications of the expansion project to assess any shortfalls in the existing plant.  Following this, MSA designed the required plant upgrades including a new biological treatment plant with Membrane Bioreactor technology.
THE OUTCOME
The plant was upgraded to increase the volumetric treatment capacity by 45% to enable full treatment of all additional effluent from the CP2 project.

Northern Innovation were successful in winning the tender process and MSA provided technical support throughout the installation and commissioning phases to ensure both projects were executed successfully. The upgrades facilitate the site new product introduction by ensuring the wastewater plant remained compliant as well as future proofing planned expansions.

WHAT WE OFFER

Project Gallery

The Dale Farm Group has had an ongoing partnership with MSA for a long number of years now, and they have always provided professional support and expertise both for the day-to-day management of our effluent plants, as well as helping us through the journey of several large expansion projects. They adopt a practical and ‘hands on’ approach, at the same time as being very client focused in achieving the right outcomes for many of the challenges arising. We look forward to continued collaboration with this young dynamic Team, who I would have no hesitation recommending to other Businesses.
