Background
Kerry Ingredients, Mozzo produces flavours used as supplements for the food and beverage manufacturing industries. All effluent generated on site had previously been discharged to a Balance Tank before being released to sewer for further treatment by the local authority. The site received a reduced COD consent limit of 500mg/l, which meant further treatment was required.
Scope
MSA Environmental worked with Kerry on a comprehensive effluent strategy & options review involving a thorough assessment of the current effluent situation as well as looking at options for the future to cope with the additional volumes and loadings.
Following the options review, MSA established a number of design approaches to meet Kerry’s future discharge requirements. The favoured option was for a new state-of-the-art Moving Bed BioReactor (MBBR) system due to its compact footprint.
MSA produced a Functional Design Specification that was issued for competitive tender, providing full technical and commercials evaluations of bids received and full consultancy support through the Contractor selection process.
Kerry Ingredients retained MSA throughout the Contractor detailed design, Installation & Commissioning, full performance testing and project sign-off. The project was awarded to CUSS, an international Wastewater contractor, headquartered in Germany.
Moving Bed Bioreactor Design
The design included a number of key plant items, including:
- New Crude Effluent Sumps
- Crude Effluent Screening
- New Balance Tank aeration
- pH Correction
- Moving Bed BioReactor complete with aeration system
- BioDAF solids Separation system including including chemical makeup and dosing system
- Sludge Storage
- Final Effluent Monitoring
Results
The plant was commissioned in March 2021 and is achieving excellent compliance levels. MSA’s design will ensure the site can continue to grow and expand whilst meeting all effluent discharge parameters and meeting its environmental obligations.
