The activated sludge plant uses a variety of microorganisms to treat the wastewater.

THE CHALLENGE
Trewithen Dairy is a family run business based at Greymare Farm, situated near Lostwithiel, Cornwall on a 500-acre site. Originally a dairy farm, the Clarke family started crafting dairy products in 1994, distributing milk and clotted cream to the local community.

Wastewater arising from site operations and domestic waste is discharged to the onsite effluent treatment plant. With production expected to increase over the next few years, Trewithen Dairy were keen to explore the options available for increasing the current ETP’s treatment capacity.

WHAT WE DID
MSA were appointed to undertake an independent review of the effluent treatment plant and provide an initial view on the options available.

Following this review, Trewithen Dairy have decided to proceed with the conversion of the existing SBR system to a continuous activated sludge operation with external gravity settlement tank for solids separation.

The project involved:

  • New Aeration Tank feed pumps and pumped line
  • New Polypropylene Selector tank
  • New Glass-Lined Steel Settlement Tank and Feed Line
  • New RAS Pumps and Line to selector tank
  • New Treated Effluent Tank
  • Excavation and Civil engineering works
  • New Control Panel, PLC & HMI
  • All mechanical and electrical works
  • All pipework and valves
THE OUTCOME
Trewithen Dairy completed the upgrade of the effluent plant to convert from a batch process to a continuous activated sludge plant in February 2022.

The plant continues to perform well and the site now has further expansion plans to bring true Cornish Dairy to the UK and beyond.
