Dairy Effluent Treatment

Yeo Valley produces branded & own label chilled desserts and ice cream at the site in Newton Abbot, Devon.

In October 2020, we completed an effluent options review for the site that provided a comprehensive assessment of the available options for dairy effluent treatment, including pre-treatment as well as CAPEX and OPEX estimates.

We developed the concept design provided as part of our Effluent Strategy Review and prepared a Functional Design Specification (FDS) and associated drawings for the required primary effluent treatment system.

This enabled Yeo Valley to obtain firm and fixed prices from suitable Contractors on a ‘like for like’ basis against the same scope of supply.

The scope of the Functional Design Specification (FDS) was agreed with Yeo Valley at the outset and the primary treatment items raised by MSA within our Effluent Strategy Review report plus additional agreed items. The scope of this project was as follows:

  • Crude effluent screening
  • Balance Tank (200 m³) with mixing and aeration
  • Crude effluent divert system
  • Instrumentation for monitoring and control
  • Forward feed pump set from Balance Tank to DAF plant
  • A DAF pipe flocculator
  • A new DAF plant (c. 11 m³/hr)
  • Chemical Dosing & Storage
  • DAF Sludge Storage
"MSA provided a range of consultancy services throughout this project for our Newton Abbot site including identification of an appropriate effluent treatment solution, providing the outline design package for competitive tendering and retained consultancy throughout the installation and commissioning phases. The installed plant has met its objectives and critically, has enabled the site to achieve a discharge to sewer within the SWW trade effluent limits and enabled a reduction in operational costs. Overall, MSA provided Yeo Valley with a highly professional and responsive service backed up with suitable technical expertise and were a key member of the ETP project team."
